1 in every 10 children are born preterm. 

Here are definitions of term and the degree of prematurity varies:

  • Full-term: Live birth >37 weeks post-menstrual age
  • Moderate-late: birth at 32-37 weeks
  • Very pre-term: Birth at 28-32 weeks
  • Extremely pre-term: Birth at <28 weeks

Babies born preterm may be at higher risk for development delays and disabilities than children born at term. In particular, we have been researching how preterm birth affects language development.
